The HDFC Bank is organizing an Art Competition for School Children for the second successive year in 2010. This event is coinciding  with the United Nations World Habitat day. The United Nations, prime mover the World’s Habitat Day, has designated the first Monday of October in every year as the World Habitat Day. This year’s theme is identified as “Better City Better Life”

The objective of the competition is to promote the importance of protecting the environment and at the same time developing the awareness of basic human rights on adequate shelter, among the younger generation and through them to give a message to the society on their responsibility to protect the environment.

The HDFC Bank is a specialized housing bank quoted at the Colombo Stock exchange sponsoring this event as one of its CSR projects for the financial year 2010 and to provide an opportunity to developing the creative and innovative ideas of our children on the current theme.

The winners of the art competition will be selected, recognized, and rewarded by the HDFC Bank at an award ceremony that will be held in Colombo, October 2010 along with an exhibition covering selected works of participants. This event is conducted with the prior approval of the Ministry of Education and in collaboration of the UN Habitat office Sri Lanka.

The participants have an added advantage in taking part in this event, securing a prize, and they will earn marks and/or grading which will be taken into account for their university entrance in the future.

The inaugural completion  attracted  participants from all parts of the country including north and eastern provinces. We observed a great enthusiasm igniting not only among the school children but also teachers and parents. We are planning to build on the last year’s success to facilitate larger participation this year, said Mr. Suresh Amerasekara, CEO of HDFC Bank.

The different themes have been allocated to different age groups ranging from 4 – 16 years. The competition will be opened from 02 August 2010 and the closing date will be September 20, 2010. The late entries will not be entertained.  The prospective students may collect the application from any of the HDFC Bank branches or Aesthetic Division of the Ministry of Education.
